This week on Comms Spotlight, we meet Morolake Philip-Ladipo, a Comms professional who has intentionally grown in skill and as a leader. Her path into Communications began with a fascination for storytelling. Currently, she works as the PR and Corporate Communications Manager, Wema Bank.
How did your interest in Communications begin?
My journey into Communications began with a deep fascination for storytelling. I love its unique power to shape perception, foster connection, and drive meaningful action. I’ve always been intrigued by how brands cultivate relationships with their audiences, and how a well-crafted message can inspire trust and loyalty. That curiosity naturally drew me into the world of Brand Management, Public Relations, and Marketing Communications.
As my career evolved, I came to understand that Communications goes far beyond sending messages; it’s about creating value, nurturing relationships, and influencing culture. It’s in those moments where connection meets impact that I truly find my purpose. That’s what fuels my passion and keeps me committed to the work I do.
What do you do as the PR and Corporate Communications Manager at Wema Bank?
As the PR and Corporate Communications Manager at Wema Bank I lead strategic efforts to shape and protect the bank’s reputation, enhance brand perception, and build meaningful engagement with both internal and external stakeholders.
My role cuts across media relations, public relations strategy, executive visibility, crisis and issues management, internal communications, and thought leadership. I also collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to ensure our communications are not only consistent and impactful but also aligned with the bank’s vision and values.
What excites me most about my role is the opportunity to tell authentic stories that reflect our brand’s purpose, amplify the voices behind our innovations, and foster trust with our audience. I’m also deeply passionate about team development, and I find great fulfillment in mentoring and empowering the next generation of communicators.
What keeps you inspired in your work, especially during difficult moments?
My inspiration comes from the impact I see Communications make every day. Whether it’s launching a campaign that resonates deeply with people, driving internal engagement, or helping to reposition a brand seeing the results and the connection built is truly fulfilling.
In tough moments, I remind myself why I started my purpose, my passion for building stories and brands, and my commitment to excellence. I also lean on my tribe, the incredible team I work with, industry peers, and mentors who challenge and encourage me.
Staying grounded in purpose and embracing each challenge as a learning opportunity helps me stay resilient and inspired.
What’s the biggest challenge you’ve faced on your career journey, and how did you deal with it?
One of the biggest challenges I faced was finding my voice and leadership style in a fast-paced, ever-evolving industry. Early on, I sometimes doubted my seat at the table, especially in highly competitive environments.
But over time, I learned that authenticity, empathy, and competence are powerful leadership traits. I started leaning into my strengths, continuously upskilling, and building confidence through action.
I also invested in personal development, taking strategic courses, seeking feedback, and being intentional about growth. Today, I lead with courage, clarity, and compassion, and I’m still learning every day.
How have you stayed passionate about your career over the years?
Passion, for me, is fueled by purpose. I genuinely love what I do the creativity, the impact, the strategy, and the people. No two days are the same, and that keeps me energised. I also make it a point to evolve with industry. I take courses, join professional communities, mentor others, and stay curious.
Passion needs fuel, and for me, that fuel is growth, contribution, and creativity.
I’m committed to building brands that resonate and creating meaningful connections that leave a lasting impact.
If you could give advice to yourself at the start of your career, what would it be?
I will say Trust your journey, and don’t shrink yourself to fit into boxes you’ve outgrown. Be bold, be curious, and never stop learning. Your voice, your perspective, and your passion matter, own them.
I would also remind my younger self that growth is not always linear, and that every experience good or tough is shaping you for where you’re meant to be. Stay true, stay kind, and always show up with excellence.
